Our studio-built system is without question the greenest stair you can build.
Very little waste is generated in our high-end studio. Like any fine furniture, a properly-constructed staircase requires no framing at all. We leave those trees in the forest.
The small quantity of scrapwood our process generates never goes into a landfill – it’s donated to local artists and craftspeople.
Whether you’re looking for a tropical hardwood or domestic eco-timber we try and source your material as responsibly as possible. Often times we can source FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) lumber, the FSC provides a chain of custody, certifying that your lumber was grown and replaced responsibly. By doing this it could be possible to build a hardwood staircase from a single tree grown in a sustainable forest.
Our dedication to green building and our appetite for new and emerging materials have helped us create unique, high-quality works and create new traditions that can endure for another thousand years.
We’ve participated in many green, award-winning projects, from a grand penthouse in a LEED-silver-certified Skyscraper to a contemporary bamboo staircase for higher education. One of our premier residential projects we incorporated environmentally-friendly (40% recycled content) acrylic eco-resin panels and won the Best Curved Staircase (2008) Design award from the Stairway Manufacturers Association.
For a luxury condo in Maui we built a grand staircase of windfall Hawaiian Koa and won Best Straight Staircase (2008) Design award from the Stairway Manufacturers Association. While outside of Jackson Hole in Alta, Wyoming we built an historical reproduction staircase of reclaimed black walnut, salvaged from a 150-year old country house in Indiana.
“A client came to us who wanted a bamboo stair railing. At that time that there was no dimensional lumber being made of bamboo – anywhere.
"So we made our own structurally-rated lumber from sustainable bamboo. At inspection time it tested 50% over spec. Not every shop can do something like that.”
